The Cuban Adjustment Act
In the 1960s, as Cubans began to arrive in the USA, the US passed the Cuban Adjustment Act, allowing Cuban nationals to acquire refugee status as soon as they enter the US, and a green card, a year after arriving. This law was vigorously attacked by the Castro regime during the Cold War. The program allowed the US to obtain some of Cuba’s most talented citizens. Cuban Americans became the most successful immigrant group in US history, in terms of economic development, political office, and cultural achievements.
New Migration Accords: Castro’s New Trojan Horse
In the mid 1990s, the Regime signed a new agreement with the Clinton Administration, by which the US would give the regime 20,000 tourist visas per year and send back any refugees captured at sea. In exchange, the Regime is to crackdown on refugees attempting to escape, and it would let political dissidents travel abroad.
The Regime has used the accords as a Trojan Horse, sending those who are loyal to it, or those who are at least, not opposed to it to the US. The requirements for US tourist visa (that the applicant show that he is happy in his country and wants to return) almost guarantee that the visas are granted to those who have no quarrel or even support the Regime. As a result, there is a growing minority of Cuban immigrants who actually support the Regime, and dislike the traditional Cuban American community, reducing the solidarity traditionally displayed by Cuban Americans towards newly arrived refugees.
This new immigration system is also used by the Regime to export organized criminal operations, as a form of economic warfare against what it sees as its mortal enemy, the US. As a result, Miami has become the center of certain types of organized crime linked to the Castro regime, including medicare fraud, credit card fraud, and other criminal enterprises. Those arrested promptly return to Cuba, where they remain without consequence.
Inspire America proposes legislative amendments to the Cuban Adjustment Act to counter this new threat from the Regime.
